Alla sua quarta personale presso la galleria Fabio Paris, l’artista bolognese Fabio Torre propone un gruppo di lavori che vanno a comporre un’unica narrazione, pressochè site specific. Abituato a impiegare la pittura come crocevia dei linguaggi fotografico e cinematografico, Torre propone questa volta la rilettura di un mezzo assai diffuso negli anni ’60 e ’70, il super-8, disponendo una serie di frames dal forte sapore nostalgico. Il tema è la ricerca di se stessi, metaforizzata in un viaggio-film-sogno.
Cercarsi-partire-perdersi, proprio sul termine lost fa perno questa installazione. Torre prende in prestito la vicenda dell’artista olandese Bas Jan Ader, attivo in California nei primi anni ’70, che partì su una piccolissima imbarcazione tentando la traversata dell’oceano Atlantico per realizzare In Search of the Miraculous, sfida estrema e opera-ponte tra arte e vita.
I Frames from a Lost Friend di Fabio Torre prendono avvio proprio da immagini del protagonista che si dirige verso il largo su una bicicletta, lenta sequenza dalla conclusione metaforica: il protagonista sparisce, il mare restituisce sulla spiaggia la bicicletta. Sulla parete accanto scorre in video l’instancabile, quasi ipnotico movimento del mare: un mare apparentemente vuoto, sempre diverso e sempre uguale, che col suo orizzonte piatto crea un istintivo sentimento di attesa e speranza di ritorno.
In un’altra sequenza, presentata nel formato del “provino a contatto”, il protagonista è ripreso nel celebre video I’m too sad to tell you, in un interminabile e inconsolabile pianto.
Lontano da ogni intento didascalico o citazionista, la mostra propone allo spettatore un momento di sosta sulla soglia di questo mondo incerto, in un momento in cui nodi importanti vengono al pettine.
For his 4th solo show at Fabio Paris Art Gallery, Bologna-based artist Fabio Torre presents a group of new works organized as a single narration, nearly site specific. Using painting as a crossroads of photographic and cinematographic languages, Torre is re-proposing today a popular media in 60’s and 70’s, the super-8, arranging a series of frames characterized by a strong nostalgic flavour. The subject is to be in search of ourselves, treated metaphorically by the use of a journey-film-dream.
To search of ourselves-to leave-getting lost: the present installation is pivoting around the term lost. Torre borrows the happenings of the Dutch-born artist Bas Jan Ader, working in California in the early 70’s, who set sail in a tiny boat across the Atlantic to realize his project In search of the Miraculous, an extreme challenge bridging art and life.
Fabio Torre’s Frames from a Lost Friend start with the hero putting out to sea on his bike, a slow sequence ending in metaphor: the hero disappears, the sea returns the bike on a beach. In a video on the next wall, the tireless, nearly hypnotic movement of the sea runs: a seemingly empty sea, always the same and always different, moving the viewer to a spontaneous feeling of waiting and hope of return.
In another sequence, in a contact-sheet like format, the hero is seen in his famous video I’m too sad to tell you, in endless and inconsolable tears.
Far from any hagiographic or citationistic purpose, the show aims at offering the viewer a moment of pause on the threshold of this unsteady world, in a moment when the day of reckoning comes.
