ESSERE A CASA/THIS IS MY PLACE IS THE THEME OF THE THIRD EDITION OF DI CARTA/PAPERMADE, THE INTERNATIONAL BIENNALE OF WORKS IN PAPER
What does it mean to be at home and to be able to say: “This is my place”? What do we mean by: “I feel at home here” or “I’d like to feel at home somewhere” or “With you I feel at home”?
This is the theme that Di carta / Papermade, international biennale of works in paper explores in its third edition, through the works of about eighty artists from all over the world, and particularly Portugal, this edition’s guest of honour. From 10 December 2017 until 25 March 2018, Palazzo Fogazzaro will host this particular exhibition, organized and curated by the artist Valeria Bertesina, a vast collective of works in paper that will include many different formats such as art prints, art books and installations.
The visitors can form a bond of empathy with the works and reflect on their own soul places and those of others, the refuges and the relations that we have with the land in which our invisible roots are buried, made of our attachments, memories, language and culture. There is the Fatherland, the Motherland, sometimes the step-motherland. There is that clearing in the woods that we alone know about (where our restlessness finds peace). There is the neverland between the lines of a book, in the projections of a dream and in the imagination. Utopia.
If man is a social and political creature, what part has the other in this place we call home? Was home always there, is it there now or must we build it anew? And how, and how many times? When we speak of home, questions develop in clusters.
The knowledge and feeling of being at home are as central and enigmatic as the concept of identity. They share the abyss that underlies the pronouns when we say: “I”, “we”. They are the cause or the purpose of everything we do and say.
But has man really been given something he can call home? Or is it inevitably only something indefinite he yearns for? A nostos, a voyage of return prompted by nostalgia. Homeward bound.
A “nest” of peace and quiet seems precluded to man, enveloped in the hopelessly tangled jumble of nature and culture, of naturalness and artificiality that is the hallmark of human nature, suspended between environment and transcendence. And so nothing counts for man like being able to feel at home.
“We are proud to present the third edition of the Biennale that has the sponsorship this year of the Club Unesco, in recognition of its value” says the city councillor for culture, Roberto Polga, “and we have the honour of welcoming, among others, two important guests: Raul Meel, who returns to Schio for the Biennale for the second time, and for an exceptional event, and Silvestre Pestana, one of the greatest Portuguese artists”.
The inauguration will take place on Saturday, December 9 at 5:30 pm, with the presentation by the curator. Speakers will include Chiara Giorgetti, Nuno Canelas, Silveste Pestana and Raul Meel.
Cosa significa essere a casa e poter dire di un luogo: “è il mio posto?” Cosa diciamo con: “Qui mi sento a casa” o “Vorrei sentirmi a casa in qualche luogo” o “Con te mi sento a casa”?
È questo il tema che Di carta / Papermade, biennale internazionale di opere di carta, affronta nella sua terza edizione, attraverso le opere di un’ottantina di artisti provenienti da tutto il mondo e in particolare dal Portogallo, paese ospite. Dal 10 dicembre 2017 al 25 marzo 2018, Palazzo Fogazzaro ospiterà nuovamente questa particolare rassegna, progettata e curata dall’artista Valeria Bertesina, un’ampia esposizione collettiva di opere di carta che comprende realizzazioni diverse come le stampe d’arte, i libri d’artista e le istallazioni.
Il visitatore potrà dunque entrare in empatia con le opere e riflettere sui propri e altrui luoghi dell’anima, i rifugi e il rapporto che si ha con la terra, in cui affondano invisibili radici, fatte di affetti, di memoria, di lingua e di cultura. C’è la Patria, la Matria, a volte matrigna. C’è quella radura nel bosco che solo noi sappiamo (in cui si placa l’inquietudine dell’esserci). Il non luogo tra le righe di un libro, nelle proiezioni del sogno o della fantasia. L’utopia.
Se l’uomo è animale sociale e politico, che parte ha l’altro in questo luogo chiamato casa? La casa c’era, c’è o va costruita? E come e quante volte? Quando parliamo di casa, le domande si sviluppano in grappoli.
Il motivo e il sentimento dell’essere a casa sono altrettanto centrali ed enigmatici quanto il concetto di identità. Condividono l’abisso che soggiace ai pronomi quando diciamo: “io”, “noi”. Costituiscono il presupposto o il fine del dire e del fare.
Ma davvero all’uomo è dato qualcosa che possa chiamare casa? O è inevitabilmente il suo, sempre e solo un indefinito desiderio di? Un nostos, un viaggio di ritorno pungolato di nostalgia. Verso casa.
All’indistricabile compresenza di natura e cultura, di naturalità e artificialità propria della natura umana sospesa tra ambiente e trascendenza sembra essere preclusa una “tana” di quiete. E perciò nulla conta per l’uomo quanto il poter sentirsi a casa.
“Siamo orgogliosi di presentare la 3^ edizione della Biennale che quest’anno ha avuto anche il patrocinio dei Club Unesco in riconoscimento del suo valore” dichiara l’assessore alla Cultura Roberto Polga “e abbiamo l’onore di avere tra gli altri, due ospiti importanti: Raul Meel, che torna a Schio per la seconda volta per la Biennale e per un evento eccezionale e Silvestre Pestana, uno dei più grandi artisti portoghesi”.
L’inaugurazione avrà luogo sabato 9 dicembre alle 17.30 alla presenza della curatrice e con gli interventi di Chiara Giorgetti, Nuno Canelas, Silveste Pestana, Raul Meel.
